Emerging junior stars, Aldrich Potgieter (Joondalup CC) and Yeah-Jin Lee (Royal Perth Golf Club) have claimed the 2019 Cobra Puma Junior Championships in overcast conditions at Royal Perth Golf Club.
Joondalup member, Aldrich Potgieter pieced together two rounds of impressive golf to claim a 2-shot victory ahead of Jordan Jung (Mount Lawley Golf Club) and Ethan Lim (Melville Glades Golf Club). Potgieter shot an opening round of 73, carding three birdies and four bogeys to place himself in the final group on day two.
Potgieter carried his impressive form into the second round of competition, recording four more birdies on the way to a score of 71.
This result is a breakout performance for Aldrich and his name now sits alongside Min Woo Lee, Curtis Luck and Craig Parry as winners of the Junior Championship.
Overnight leader Thomas Patterson (Cottesloe Golf Club) faltered in the second round to finish with a score of 78 that placed him T8 for the championship.
The Girls’ side of the competition proved to be a battle between two Royal Perth locals. Overnight leader Yeah-Jin Lee and Amie Phobubpa went head-to-head over the final 18 holes.
A late bogey from Lee opened the door for a dramatic finish. Unfortunately, Phobubpa carded a bogey of her own and despite a birdie on 18, she hadn’t done enough to draw level with Lee.
The Cobra Puma Junior Championship title is another impressive accolade for Yeah-Jin Lee who represented WA in both the Girls’ and Women’s State Teams earlier this year.
The “Royals” are to be congratulated on dominating the top five positions on the girls’ leaderboard, with some outstanding golf displayed by fellow Royal Perth members Minke Terblanche and Brooke Price, followed by young Royal Fremantle Golf Club hopeful Celine Chen.

The two-day stroke competition attracted eighty juniors from around WA and offered an encouraging insight into the future golfing talent being fostered in our state.
