Kathryn Norris and Hayden Hopewell claimed the women’s and men’s Tasmanian Open titles at Ulverstone Golf Club on Sunday. Norris and Hopewell both finished runners-up in 2019 and it is fantastic to see them both take the win in 2020.
Kathryn Norris put together a blemish-free final round of two-under-par to hold off Ulverstone local, Sarah Johnstone and claim a five-stroke victory. Norris finished runner-up to Becky Kay last year and she was relieved to go one better this year.
“It is nice to get a win finally in a state event, I have been runner-up a few times, so this is really nice,” she said.
Hopewell’s second round of 6-under (66) saw him enter the final day with a commanding 10-shot lead over his nearest competitor. Despite dropping three shots on Sunday, Hopewell cruised to a five-shot victory, a nice reward after a tough playoff loss just 12 months earlier.
“That six-under second round put me miles ahead. I definitely got a lot of comfort from that round, but it was never over,” Hopewell said.
“I was really good off the tee and didn’t miss many fairways, I was probably just a little tentative because there are not many times you can cruise to a national win.”
Both Hopewell and Norris will be hoping to carry their impressive form into the WA Amateur Championships at Melville Glades in a few weeks time.
