The Provincial Experience

21st Sep 2018

Many golfing tournaments throughout Western Australian hold an esteemed history of talented players and phenomenal golf courses, as well as plenty of fun and enjoyment, and the Provincial Tournament is no exception.

Inaugurated in 1984 the tournament represents an opportunity for clubs outside the metropolitan area to play host to the thoroughly enjoyable tournament you can ill-afford to miss out on.

More simply, it’s the equivalent of a Women’s Sand Greens Tournament – with Canadian Foursomes played on the Friday, before the two-day stroke play tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

The much-loved themed dinner takes place on Saturday night – terrifically hosted – with‘AFL’ the theme for 2018, an opportunity to wear your team’s colours at the table, anddrinks and dancing the order of the evening.

The dinner has been etched into folklore for “Donna’s Frock”- a fundraising objective inaugurated by Donna Crouch for the Royal Flying Doctor, which has raised more than $20,000 in the past 15 years.

Brookton Golf Club will be this year’s host from July 6-8 – with the town just 1.5 hours east of Perth.

Amongst the competition of the weekend are several perpetual trophies up for grabs- each steeped in tradition:

Provincial Cup (inaugurated at the events inception in 1984) – the best gross score across the two rounds of stroke play and the main trophy for the event, previous winners including Jessica Speechley, Whitney Harvey and Anna Parsons.

Adele Ludeman Trophy (Donated by Ms Ludeman who was president of Bolgart GC) – the best sand greens player across the 36 holes of stroke play.

Eileen Dawson Shield (Ms Dawson having received an MBE for her contribution to golf) – the winners of the teams event (the two best scores from a club on Saturday).

Provincial Picture (donated by Margret Shenton of Quairading) – city v country teams event (the best five scores from country and city players on Saturday).

This tournament is an opportunity not to be missed, open to players with GA Handicaps of 21.9 and below – make it a weekend with friends and enjoy the beautiful surrounds of Brookton Golf Club.
