WA’s Jessica Speechley and Kristie Smith shot 2-under rounds of 70 at the Clearwater Golf Club to sit in a tie for seventh place after the opening day of the NZ Women’s Open in Christchurch.
Smith, the 2011 champion, is looking to continue her form that qualified her for the LPGA Tour and gave her a 5th place finish at the NSW Open last week.
Leading the field is South Korea’s Soon Woo Bae at 4-under par with NZ teen sensation Lydia Ko a shot back at 3-under. Sarah Jane Smith is the best placed of the Australians, also at 3-under par while Joondalup’s Whitney Hillier is in 33rd place at even par.
