West Australian Kirsten Rudgeley has recorded the best ever result by an Australian at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur by finishing in a tie for eighth.
The 21-year-old from Mount Lawley opened the tournament with rounds of 73 and 74 at Champions Retreat, but she saved her best round for last – an even-par 72 – when the top-30 moved to the home of The Masters, Augusta National.
Only four players were able to break par in the final round, and Rudgeley impressed with memorable birdies at the par-5 eighth and the par-5 13th to remain at three-over for the tournament.
She was in contention all week, but The Athena champion would have needed something special to give victory a nudge as 16-year-old American Anna Davis became the youngest champions in the event’s history after lighting up Augusta National with a final round of 69 to finish at one-under.
Emily Mahar was the other Australian in the field, but she was unable to make the cut with consecutive rounds of 76.
