Gregory Rhodes and Jacqui Morgan have secured the men’s and women’s Senior Amateur of Western Australia titles respectively after dominant victories at Mandurah Country Club on Friday afternoon.
Despite shooting 77 in his first round, Rhodes closed with a pair of 70’s to clinch the title from 2016 winner Paul Chappell (Hartfield CC) and WAGC’s Neville Delane.
The Victorian was flawless in his opening nine, nailing three birdies in his first five holes to slide back into calculation for the trophy. From there consistency became key, a birdie on 11 furthered his lead, with bogeys on 14 and 17 unable to stop his dominance.
The Coomealla talent eventually finished four-strokes ahead.
Morgan gained her wire-to-wire victory in commanding fashion, finishing a phenomenal 17 shots ahead defending champion Janine Northrop.
The Monash member was the clear highlight of the week with scores of 73, 74 and 76 easily gifting the travelling competitor the crown. The champion shot 11 straight pars to begin her round, and despite a double-bogey on the 15th, couldn’t be caught.
Southport’s Brad Dowling led going into the men’s final round but couldn’t continue his fine form with double-bogeys on 6 and 14 effectively ending his charge towards the title.
Mandurah local Susan Plug finished a further two-shots behind Northrop in third position, while a prominent Terri Davies (Joondalup CC) and consistent Nikki Haines (Moore Park GC) rounded out the top 5.
Plug didn’t leave empty handed however, securing the women’s nett title over Morgan, while Malcolm Watson (The Vines) earned the men’s equivalent from Graham Bowen (Mandurah CC).
