Peake and Davey set the pace at Aglime Sand Greens Championship of WA

10th Aug 2019

Former champions Ryan Peake and Adam Davey have both shot opening rounds of 68 to lead the Aglime Sand Greens Championship of WA at Narembeen GC.

Davey got off to a hot start when he birdied the 10th, his opening hole of the day. This was followed by three more birdies and no dropped shots to card a round of 4-under.

Ryan Peake played alongside Davey in the same group and he got off to an equally impressive start. Three birdies and no dropped shots through the opening 9 holes had Peake in a great position as he made the turn.

A dropped shot on Hole 3, his 12th of the day, was the lone blemish on his scorecard.

Speaking after the round Peake said, “It’s great to get out of the city and play golf. The morale is really high and the guys take it seriously but also know how to enjoy themselves.”

I’m looking forward to challenging for the title tomorrow. I’m always a bit jittery and nervous but if I can put myself in good positions then I’ll feel a lot more confident,” said Peake.

Rodney Shemeld, the defending champion, sits just one shot back of the leaders after a rollercoaster opening round of 69.

Shemeld played some brilliant golf to card seven birdies but unfortunately, he dropped three shots on his opening nine and one more on the back nine to leave him just off the pace.

Tied with Shemeld at three-under is Mount Lawley’s, Shaun Malone. The former professional golfer has adapted well to the sand greens and is well in contention heading into the second round.

The top performance of the day belonged to Charles Russell from Broomehill GC. The 9-handicapper hit 71 off-the-stick (his best score ever) to have a nett score of 62.

Russell said the key to his success was his short-game that allowed him to save par on more than one occasion.

The action kicks off again tomorrow morning with the first groups off at 7:00 am and the lead groups teeing off from 12:00 pm.
