The GolfWA Provincial Tournament continues to draw big crowds as a group of slightly under 100 women will head to Wongan Hills for this year’s tournament. Last year’s tournament in Katanning was won by Mount Lawley’s Kirsten Rudgeley who recently took out the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open at Royal Troon.
Beginning in 1984, the Provincial has become one of the most fun weekends on the GolfWA calendar, this year expected to be no different. The tournament kicks off with the Canadian Foursomes on Friday with 42 teams raring to go for what has become a fun and light-hearted start to the weekend. City players will be looking to win their first-ever City v Country matchup, with the coveted painting alluding city dwellers thus far.
Of course, not to be forgotten is the timely tradition of “Donna’s Frock” will be back once again after raising more than $25,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and provided much entertainment for the Provincial crowds over he years. The current custodian of the frock is Anne Fowler from the Royal Perth Golf Club.
Of course, no Provincial weekend would be complete without the Saturday night themed dinner, with this year’s theme being “Black & White with a touch of Gold”, be sure to bring your best outfit!
Amongst the competition of the weekend are several perpetual trophies up for grabs:
- Provincial Cup (inaugurated at the event’s inception in 1984) – awarded to the player with the best gross score across the two rounds of stroke play and the main trophy for the event. Previous winners include Jessica Speechley, Whitney Harvey and Anna Parsons.
- Adele Ludeman Trophy (Donated by Ms Ludeman who was president of Bolgart GC) – awarded to the best sand greens player across the 36 holes of stroke play.
- Eileen Dawson Shield (Ms Dawson received an MBE for her contribution to golf) – awarded to the winners of the team’s event (the two best scores from a club on Saturday).
