Golf Australia today announced participation figures not seen in 50 years of data collection, as the boom in golf gathers pace. Golf club memberships in Australia rose 6.3 percent for the calendar year of 2020 to 409,970. It is the biggest rise in membership figures (more than 24,000) seen since the numbers were first collated nationally in 1970. Despite varying levels of pandemic lockdowns, all states enjoyed similar level increases with metropolitan markets up by 5.3 percent over 2019. Growth of more than seven percent was experienced in regional areas, the geographic segment that had been under pressure in recent years. Men’s club membership soared by 7.4 percent in 2020, whilst women’s saw a 1.2 percent increase.
In Western Australia, club membership increased by 8 percent to 34,600, with Metropolitan, Country and Public Club Membership increasing by 8 percent, 5 percent and 11 percent respectively. Men’s club membership increased by 9 percent whilst female membership increased by 3 percent. Drilling down further, male membership in Metropolitan clubs increased 9.4 percent, while increases in male membership of 5.9 and 11.8 percent, were recorded in Country and Public Clubs. There was little change in female country membership, however female membership in Metropolitan clubs increased 3 percent and 4.6 percent in Public Clubs. Very pleasingly, Junior Membership for both boys and girls increased significantly, highlighted by a 19 percent increase in girls at Metropolitan CLubs and a whopping 50 percent increase in boys and girls at Country Clubs.
