Connor McKinney has continued his impressive run of form this season and stormed home to claim the 2019 Drummond Golf Boys’ Junior Amateur Championship by a comfortable seven shots at Mandurah Country Club.
McKinney, a member at Joondalup Country Club continues to show promise. “I gave myself a lot of chances today, hit it well off the tee which you really have to do here. This coupled with solid putting ended in a good result,” he said.
McKinney shot two fantastic rounds of 66 and 65 to finish at 11-under for the 36-hole event.
Gosnells Golf Club member Maddison Hinson-Tolchard recovered from a second-round triple-bogey on hole seven to take home the 2019 Drummond Golf Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship by five shots.
Three consecutive birdies on Hinson-Tolchard’s final nine helped her secure the victory. Speaking after the round she said, “this was my best string of holes.”
“The course was great, and the fairways were in amazing condition. I’ve been playing these junior competitions since I was eight and this was my last junior event.”
“The first Junior Amateur I played was at Gosnells when Hannah won it – I played with her and I was pretty starstruck,” Hinson-Tolchard said after her round.
Joondalup Country Club’s Gareth Steyn took home the Boys’ Nett prize after his second-place finish.
Speaking after the awards ceremony, Steyn said, “It was my last one of these events. I either wanted to win it today or go out there and make sure I didn’t leave any shot without giving it my best. I’m pleased with the result.”
Steyn won the sub-junior category in 2017 and this year was his fourth consecutive year of participating in the 36-hole competition.
Mount Lawley Golf Club took home a double victory, with youngsters Ruby Fry and Joe Buttress winning the sub-junior categories, and Fry also securing the Girls Nett Trophy, kindly donated by Kay Lane.
