The Junior pennant season began on Sunday with a full field of boys and girls in seven divisions battling it out for the 2022 pennant flags. It was tremendous to see some familiar and new faces gracing the fairways joined by their club support crews.
Royal Fremantle and Gosnells Golf Clubs played host to the first exciting round for the boys.
The Joondalup team were strong, dominating their first round with a 5-0 victory over Mount Lawley. Joondalup Team Captain, Lachie Hall started with a bang winning 9/8 sharing,“very happy with a great win for us today. We are so pleased to be out on course together as a team. It is going to be a great junior season ahead.”
Royal Fremantle are showing strong promise for the season, with wins in Division 1 and 3, but were challenged by The South West contingent in Division 2, who bought home a confident win 4-1 over the Freo boys.
The girls commenced their first round at Mount Lawley Golf Club. Fielding two strong teams in Division 1, Mount Lawley’s Team 2 came up trumps over their sister team, with notable strong performances by Erina Tan, Isabella Leniatek and Ai-Leng Lee. Gosnells narrowly defeated Joondalup in this top tier competition. This will be a tight year in the Division 1 with some extraordinary talent coming through the ranks.
The Lake Karrinyup / Cottesloe joint team had a confident win 4-1 in Division 2 over WAGC. Royal Perth and Lakelands clocked up wins but with much tighter margins, so it will make for interesting viewing how this season plays out.
With some notable Junior talent currently travelling interstate, and others due to travel soon, the Junior Pennant teams could face some reshuffling with some uncertain weeks ahead and travel and quarantining systems in place. Hats off to the enormous team of club volunteers and host clubs that support the Junior Pennant season, offering this terrific opportunity for juniors to challenge themselves in match play competition.
