The 2020 Golf WA Junior Pennant season approaches its final round this coming weekend with some clear front runners dominating the top league positions.
In Division One Junior Boys the lads from Joondalup Country Club are looking promising for their fourth consecutive Division One crown, however, they face their biggest contest this coming Sunday in the final round against Mt Lawley at the West Australian Golf Club. With an impressive 22 out of 24 wins to date, the Joondalup boys sit in number one position on eight points with Mount Lawley GC hot on their heels on seven. These two teams sit a comfortable four points clear of all others in the Division.
Whoever wins this fierce contest on Sunday will take home the 2020 crown. There will be some exciting matchups with prominent junior amateurs such as Connor McKinney and Jordan Jung battling it out on the fairways from 7.30 am this Sunday at WAGC.
Joondalup Country Club Junior Coordinator and Pennant Manager John Greer shared some of the strategies that have contributed to the outstanding performance of their Juniors since 2017.
Four years ago we decided as a club to invest in the development of our juniors and created a bench-marked academy where the juniors all have a clear progression plan – it could be just to enjoy and participate, but it could also be to become an elite golfer.
The golf club and Joondalup resort have given us 100% backing on this and have supported our academy with funds that have helped us get to where we are today.
As a Junior committee, we sit down with the kids and the parents on a regular basis and discuss how they are progressing and what more we can do to help support. We have also created a really tight team environment where the kids train together in a dedicated practice area. We have just recently created a junior room where they can have a break, play some ping pong etc and just relax in their own space.
The Junior Girls’ Division One final round will be played this at Gosnells Golf Club. Top of the table are Royal Perth, with Gosnells just one point behind.
A win is still within Gosnells grasp on their home turf if Royal Perth are defeated by Mount Lawley Angels, and the Gosnells girls triumph over Lake Karrinyup.
With some strong experienced players in the Junior Division such as Maddison Hinson-Tolchard Yeah Jin Lee, Sheridan Clancy and Amie Phobubpa the final round of the Division One Junior Girls will make for some exciting matchplay this coming weekend.
Division Two Junior Boys predicted winner is anyone’s guess with three teams sitting in equal position at the top of the table. The Vines, Lakelands and combined South-West/Goldfields will battle it out in their final round this weekend at Melville Glades.
