The year 2020 will be remembered for how the coronavirus affected everyone and everything.
As the sporting world came to a halt due to the pandemic in March, GolfWA’s Junior Development team began making plans for a return to golf for the Smarter than Smoking program participants and MyGolf in Schools students.
By cooperating with government and health authorities, the first MyGolf in Schools session after restrictions were eased was conducted at Tuart Hill Primary School in mid-May. The revised program was delivered to over 6000 Western Australian students throughout the rest of the school year.
The Smarter than Smoking Junior Tour resumed with a full field in July at Melville Glades Golf Club. The energy was palpable as competitors appeared to be excited to be back on course.
The year 2020 required agility and flexibility. Junior Development Officer Jordan McSkimming said that he was thrilled to have been able to deliver a full program of MyGolf in Schools as well as the Smarter than Smoking Junior Tour.
“While such a challenging year for everyone and everything, it has been an amazing opportunity to grow professionally. I have learnt so much about myself”.
“I would like to personally thank all the golf clubs that gave up dates in their already full calendars to accommodate the Junior Tour and many other junior events throughout the year,” Jordan said.
COVID-19 demonstrated that grassroots sport is a fundamental part of the Western Australian lifestyle and provides physical and mental health benefits. We look forward to continuing to engage, educate and motivate our junior golfers in 2021.
