An incredible effort by the WA juniors in South Australia this week! The Junior Girls Team won gold, winning 4.5/5 matches over the course of the four day competition. A national cap for the West Australian Junior Girls! The Boy’s and Girls combined team were awarded runners-up overall after some tremendous victories over Victoria, Queensland and South Australia in the final days.
Team Captain, Amie Phobubpa, undefeated for the competition, received the girls trophy alongside team mates Sheridan Clancy, Celine Chen and Jorja Hinson-Tolchard.
Amie shared, “I am so proud of our whole team. Everyone has done an absolutely awesome job and we have worked really hard to be here. Huge thanks to Golf WA, Golf Australia, the team at Mount Osmond Golf Club and all the volunteers. Thanks to our Coach Alex McKay, Manager Catherine Strickland and all our family and friends back home for cheering us on. We are all united as one team and have had a lot of fun. The energy through this tournament has been good – we had good vibes!”
The final days of competition were close, with WA working hard in their final rounds to defeat South Australia in the morning, and a tough Queensland side in the afternoon. NSW were too strong, defeating Victoria on the final day to take out the overall crown.
The WA Boy’s Junior Team made up of Joseph Buttress, Alex Maxwell, Riley Gott and Ollie Marsh placed fourth in the boys overall trophy, only half a point behind Victoria and Queensland.
Alex Maxwell shared, “There was some tough competitors in the boys competition – we gave it a good shot and grateful to be back playing in a national event. The boys all played solidly and will certainly look forward to next year!”
After fourteen rounds of golf in twelve days, over an out for the WA State Juniors. We take away some victory, some lessons learnt, great friendships and a hunger for the crown next year.
