Joondalup’s Aldrich Potgieter fought furiously in the final five holes against Gosnells’s Josiah Gilbert to secure the 2021 Cobra Puma Junior Championship title. Approaching the 13th hole, Aldrich found himself four over, with Gilbert ahead by one stroke overall. Despite the furious wind and rain that challenged the field. Potgieter turned his game around to birdie 14,16 and 18. Gilbert took a different turn, bogeying 14,16,17 and 18, a frustrating finish for the talented youngster.
Potgieter won by an outstanding six strokes in the 36-hole competition, to gain his second win of this prestigious junior title. “As we got to the last five holes I found myself looking at birdie opportunities on all of the greens. Thankfully three of the five dropped which gave me the lead!”
The Girl’s competition was decided on Thursday morning in a one-hole playoff, won by Gosnells’ Jorja Hinson-Tolchard over Valerie Khuu. The pair were unable to be separated after 36 holes at a wet and dour Cottesloe before returning to a dry 8th hole two days later. Hinson-Tolchard held her nerve putting for both birdie and the win as she joins her sister Maddy on the Junior Championship winning list.
Many thanks for our generous sponsors Cobra Puma, and for the parents and players for braving the wild conditions!
