Hayden Hopewell has continued his stunning season to lead the Mandurah Amateur Open after two rounds at the Mandurah Country Club on Sunday afternoon.
The Royal Fremantle member, who already has two junior title victories in the past two months, fired a five-under-par 66 during the second round, taking a two-shot lead over travelling Victorian Blake Collyer.
South Australian Jack Thompson shares second spot after a round of 66, while defending champion and local West Aussie Haydn Barron is a further shot back at five-under-par total.
The trio will have their work cut out however if they are to catch the in-form Hopewell.
Six birdies throughout the day set up the blistering round for the Callaway Junior Champion, with his only blemish coming at the par-four seventh.
Collyer’s six-under-par 65 was the highlight of the day, with his round ignited by two eagles on the seventh and eleventh to elevate himself up the leaderboard.
Despite leading overnight, Barron struggled to get his game going in glorious conditions to record an even-par round, while Victorian Kyle Michel will still give himself a chance, four shots behind leader Hopewell.
WA pair Jose De Sousa and Cooper Geddes lurk dangerously at four and three-under-par respectively, with players set to be challenged by 36 holes of stroke play tomorrow.
The national ranking event will conclude tomorrow with the field cut to just to the top 50 players for two rounds of 18 holes tomorrow.
