The annual GolfWA Regional Seniors is just over two weeks away, and the Manjimup Golf Course is raring to go. Entering into its 20th year, the Regional Seniors tournament has been a popular tournament since its inception.
A tournament born from an initiative in line with the GolfWA partnership with Healthway to engage older players and give them an exciting new regional tournament, the first Regional Seniors was played over two days in Busselton. The first tournament saw heavy rain; however, that did not quell the enthusiasm of the players as every player bar two completed their two rounds of golf. This attitude has carried right through to this year, where we will see a field that currently stands at near capacity, with two days left to register, head down to Manjimup.
GolfWA recently spoke to Manjimup Country Club’s Secretary and Treasurer Raymond Caro, a man with a long time involvement at the club for the inside word on the course and what to look forward to in the town.
“We’re all really excited to see everyone come down and play the course, and there’s no better sight than seeing Manjimup be filled with the caravans of visiting players. It means good things for the Club and the town as well” Ray explains, talking up his own excitement at the upcoming tournament.
“On our course, you can never afford to be long on your approach, and if you go past the greens, then you’ll be down the hills and let me tell you, it’s not easy to get back up again! The greens aren’t that big either. In saying that, though, it’s a course that accommodates golfers of all skill levels. Birdies are there to be scored if you take your chances” he continued.
The Manjimup course has changed significantly during Ray’s long tenure. Holes have shifted, Par 3’s have become Par 4’s, but one thing Ray focused on was the greens.
“The greens are a lot slower than they used to be. The hills and curves of the greens can deceive a few people, don’t be surprised to see some three or four putts”.
Four Par 3’s, ten Par 4’s, and four Par 5’s now make up the course that is set to challenge visitors from across the state.
Not all the focus is on the course, as visitors are excited to be in Manjimup. The south-west town was recently named as a finalist in the 2021 GWN7 Top Tourism Town Awards, highlighting the exciting venue of this year’s Regional Seniors.
The Truffle Kerfuffle begins on the 25th of April for those wanting to spend a fortnight down south, and for those more interested in things that go fast, the Manjimup 15,000 Motocross race is on between the 4th and the 6th of May. Manjimup is also, of course, home to the Timber and Heritage Park with its innovative children’s playground and only a short drive to Pemberton and the Treetop Walk.
