GolfWA athletes giving back to junior golf

JIGSSA Summer Games

An all-woman GolfWA team delivered instruction to hundreds of girls at the Junior Independent Girls Schools Sporting Association (JIGSSA) Summer Games Day.

GolfWA was represented by past and present state squad members Alice Tonts, Sheridan Clancy, Elise Gavin and Isobel Dorrington (pictured above), who put more than 300 Year 4 students from Iona, MLC, Perth College, Penrhos, PLC, St Mary’s, St Hilda’s and Santa Maria through their paces.

What could have been an exercise in herding cats was instead a well-oiled machine, with the quartet – all of whom are accredited National Program Deliverers – effortlessly overseeing multiple skills sessions throughout the day.

Their efforts were much appreciated by participants and event organisers, with Gemma De Knock, IGSSA WA’s Junior School Co-ordinator, full of praise.

“It was wonderful to witness our Year 4 students gaining hands-on experience with some of the rising stars and inspiring role models in women’s golf,” she told GolfWA.

“Sessions like these are a great way to develop coordination, patience and teamwork in a fun, engaging environment. The students thoroughly enjoyed the chance to try something new and are excited for future sessions at the driving range.”

Marc Pike, GolfWA’s Game Development and High Performance Manager, added: “The impact of having four young women NPDs run the program as role models and ambassadors for the game cannot be underestimated.

“It’s always great to see our athletes giving something back to the game, and their ability to connect with the participants was exemplary.

“The day aligns perfectly with our MyGolf Girls Month in April and our thanks to IGSSA for the wonderful opportunity to showcase the sport to so many young girls.”

To mark MyGolf Girls Month, GolfWA has worked with clubs across the state to offer a series of FREE girls-only golf clinics and four-week programs between April-June. Find out full details here.
