Golf in vogue for Murdoch University students

10th Apr 2025

Nearly 70 Murdoch University students are fully equipped to teach golf after attaining their MyGolf Schools accreditation during Term 1 of the academic year.

Dozens of the university’s Year 2 and 3 Health & Physical Education (HPE) students completed online accreditation before attending practical workshops run by GolfWA and PGA pro Andrew Thomas.

MyGolf certification was added as option for HPE students at Murdoch University in 2024, when around 40 attained accreditation.

The latest batch of 69 students takes the number of accreditations past the 100 mark, creating a sustainable, long-term pathway into golf for thousands of schoolchildren, according to GolfWA’s Game Development Manager, Marc Pike.

“The level of enthusiasm we’ve seen from the Murdoch Students for golf is fantastic and will have long-tail benefits for the sport in WA for years to come once they graduate and become decision makers in the education system,” he said.

“Several of the students attending these workshops have also gone on to gain further experience by attending MyGolf in Schools sessions led by GolfWA’s Jordan McSkimming across the Perth metro area.

“This will deepen their understanding of the game and, I hope, give a clear picture of how much fun golf can be for school kids when delivered in an engaging manner.”

Nicole Arrold, Associate Lecturer at Murdoch’s College of Health and Education, also praised the impact of the practical workshops.

“One of the most important things the students can take away from these sessions is first-hand experience of how effective golf can be as a means of engaging a large number of people at the same time,” she said.

“What we’ve seen here today is an excellent example of how big groups can continually be active in a series of different exercises, which makes golf an ideal game to be taught in schools.”

GolfWA covered the costs associated with the online accreditation and workshops, which count towards the students’ university credits.

As part of their accreditation, the students have also gained access to Golf Australia’s new MyGolf Schools content and session plans via CoachMate.

The CoachMate app offers a wide range of practice plans and instructional videos for coaches across a range of sports, including golf. Full details here.
