Mandurah’s Cooper Geddes has won the Srixon International Sub Junior Classic, held at Kurri Golf Club in New South Wales.
The 13-year-old Geddes entered the round with a handy three stroke lead over American Brentt Salas only to lose it after four holes thanks to disastrous start of triple-bogey, bogey, par, bogey.
Needing to fight back, Geddes did just that with back to back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes to take back the lead by the turn. Geddes was consistent on the back nine, highlighted by a birdie on the 12th to hold a two stroke advantage on the last. Geddes may have made bogey, but it mattered little he secured his first interstate title.
Royal Fremantle’s Sylvester Tan was the only other Western Australian in the boys’ field of 82 golfers, and earned a top-5 finish thanks to a 1-under final round of 71, the only under par score for the day.
In the girls event, Kathryn Norris finished in a tie for 12th, and second in her age division.

Mandurah’s Cooper Geddes will take a three stroke lead into the final round of the Srixon International Sub Junior Classic, held at Kurri Golf Club in New South Wales.
Geddes made two birdies in his third round of 75, and holds his three stroke lead over Bradley Doherty of NSW and a further shot ahead of American Brentt Salas.
In the Junior category, Royal Fremantle’s Min Woo Lee in a tie for sixth at 1-under par, eight strokes back from leader Chris Park of Queensland.
This year, a capacity field of almost 300 golfers from around the world are taking part in the tournament, with 180 players competing in the junior section (15-17 years) at Maitland, and 120 players competing in the sub-junior section (12-14 years) at Kurri.
There is a real international flavour to the event in 2014, with teams from Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand and the United States flying in for the tournament, and they’ll be facing some stiff opposition from Australia’s best. Interstate players from Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and the Northern Territory have also made their way to the Hunter Valley, to tee it up alongside local New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory golfers.
