The new look Fremantle Public Golf Course will reopen to the public tomorrow.

The redesigned 9-hole, par 34 layout includes three completely new holes – including a par 5 hole for the first time – and new bunkers, tees and greens.

The revamped course also features an upgraded irrigation system, new cart paths and course furniture, as well as a new practice chipping and putting green.

Although it’s slightly shorter than the previous layout, the new course offers far more variety in the length of the holes plus larger and more undulating greens, so it’s more interesting to play and will provide a fun challenge for golfers of all ages and abilities.

Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said she was pleased to have the course open again.

“The designers have done a great job to retain a par 34 layout on a reduced footprint, and with the new tees, greens and bunkers, the course is looking great,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.

“The temporary facilities are still pretty basic at the moment, but they’ll be added to in the coming weeks.

“And while there’s still work to be done to build the new clubhouse and community centre, we’re happy to have the course open and to get people back and playing again.

“We thank everyone for their patience, and look forward to welcoming back all the regular club players who previously called Freo Public home, plus the casual golfers looking to squeeze in a quick nine on a fun and challenging course.”

The redesign of the Fremantle Public Golf Course was needed to accommodate the Main Roads WA High Street Upgrade project.

As part of the High Street project Main Roads has funded a program of accommodation works including the reconfiguration of the golf course and, in the next phase, the construction of a replacement clubhouse and community centre.

The redesigned course is being maintained and managed on an interim basis by the neighbouring Royal Fremantle Golf Club.

Royal Fremantle will operate the course under licence for 12 months, with the option to extend for up to a further 18 months if required.

Practice facilities including the driving range and new chipping and putting greens will also open tomorrow.

The course will be open 6am-6pm, greens fees are the same as they were prior to the redesign.
