Fewkes in Aussie line-up for Asia-Pacific Amateur

WA state captain Connor Fewkes has earned a second call-up to represent Australia at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Japan this October.

The 24-year-old Goldfields Golf Club product made his national debut in the same event in 2023, where he finished in a tie for 48th.

Fewkes will line up alongside reigning Australian Amateur champion Quinnton Croker from Royal Queensland, while defending AAC champion Jasper Stubbs from Peninsula Kingswood also is back to round out his amateur career.

US college star Tony Chen (Vic) also makes the team along with 18-year-old Queenslander Billy Dowling and Victorian duo Phoenix Campbell and Lukas Michel.

The Asia-Pacific championship carries with it the lure of starts in the 2025 Masters Tournament at Augusta National and the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

Three Australians – Stubbs last year, Harrison Crowe in 2022 and Curtis Luck in 2016 – have benefitted from this amazing experience previously having won the AAC.

“The Asia-Pacific is all about the opportunities and the prize at the end,” said team coach Matt Ballard. “We’ve seen this with our past winners Jasper Stubbs, Harrison Crowe and Curtis Luck, and how much they’ve got out of it. We know that it’s a wonderful prize for any young player to take part in two majors.

“Even aside from that, it’s another opportunity to compete at a high level, it’s playing overseas on a good golf course and under pressure. It’s a significant part of the journey for these players and we think that they’ll handle themselves well.”

The event takes place at Taiheiyo Club in Japan from October 3-6.
