Day one of the Drummond Golf Junior Amateur is in the books. The Perth weather turned it on and set up for a fantastic morning. The course was in great condition and the ready for the juniors to take to it.
With little to no wind, The Vines was primed for scoring. Even with near perfect conditions the course proved tricky. A few tucked pin positions left some tricky short sided shots and long putts.
Celine Chen shot the round of the day for the girls. A two under 70 put her on top of the leader board after round one.
Chen’s start was rough, bogeying the first three holes. She birdied two of the last four to turn at one over.
She continued the streak on the back nine. Six consecutive pars had her cruising before she flipped the switch and birdied the last three holes to finish at two under.
Hot on Chen’s tail is Erina Tan and Amanda Gan. A one over 73 has both three back of Chen going into the second round.
Last week’s champion Valerie Khuu had a two over 75 and sits in a similar position as she did last week going into round two. Don’t be surprised if Khuu surges up the leaderboard tomorrow.
Ken Gao was the only boy to shoot under par on day one. Gao shot a three under 69 and leads by three.
Starting on the tenth hole, Gao birdied one and three before bogeys on 13 and 15 had him back level. Gao birdied 18 and turned at one under.
Gao had a blemish free back nine. Two birdies and seven pars on the second nine had him sign for the lead.
Both Ollie Marsh and Nathan Willis had an even par 72. Marsh had a turbulent round with six bogeys and six birdies.
Willis was similar, four birdies two bogeys and a double have him sitting in tied second after day one.
Braedon Law and Jed Host also had solid rounds. Both carded a 3 over 75 but sit six back going into day two.
Day two is forecast to be as good as day one. With the conditions being conducive to scoring we could have a fantastic finish in sight.
The first group is off at 11 am tomorrow, Will the leaders be caught or will they tare away and take the Drummond Golf Junior Amateur trophy with them.
