The 2023 WA Open has been brought forward a week and will now take place from October 5-8 at Joondalup Resort.
Traditionally, the WA Open has been played the week following the WA PGA Championship in Kalgoorlie, but this year the events will be switched to avoid the PGA clashing with the 2023 Kalgoorlie Cup horse race.
Explaining the switch, GolfWA Chief Executive Gary Thomas said: “The Kalgoorlie Cup is one of the biggest regional sporting events in WA, so staging the PGA on the same weekend was going to make it impossible for people to find adequate accommodation for both events.
“We’re very pleased to be able to accommodate the date change and look forward to welcoming a top-class field of professionals and amateurs to the WA Open at Joondalup Resort.”
This year marks the first time since 1987 that Joondalup Resort has hosted the historic WA Open, which was first contested in 1913. The resort’s Quarry and Lakes courses will be in play for the 72-hole stroke play championship, which was won by Victorian Deyen Lawson at The Western Australian Golf Club in 2022.
Previous winners of the Open include Greg Norman, Gary Player, Kel Nagle, Stephen Leaney and WA icon Terry Gale, who won the event six times between 1972 and 1990.
As well as the 72-hole championship, the WA Open also incorporates the 36-hole All Abilities Championship for Australia’s leading golfers with a disability. This is played at the same time, on the same course and in the same conditions as the WA Open. The defending champion is Cam Pollard.
