Darkan Golf Club staged its first ‘Get Into Golf’ coaching sessions for women in June – defying expectations in the process.
Seventeen women attended sessions over a three-week period at the Wheatbelt club, with Community Instructor Megan Henry delivering the instruction as well as helping the club effectively promote the initiative to the surrounding community.
“It was a wonderful turnout, with the sessions focussing on fun and friendship as well as the basics of golf,” said Megan. “The club wasn’t initially sure how much demand there would be, but we had a huge response. The participants committed to continuing playing socially and several are exploring membership options.”
Promotion of the sessions was key to the success of the initiative. Megan worked with Darkan club secretary Estelle Buller to formulate a media and advertising campaign with information shared on social media channels as well as community noticeboards.
Megan also provided invaluable assistance in registering the club as a Get Into Golf Centre, and in assisting with the application for WA Golf Foundation funding.
Future ‘Get Into Golf’ programs are now expected to be held at the club on a regular basis, while WA golfing legend Shani Waugh will herself head to Darkan to provide further coaching sessions in July and August.
