GolfWA High Performance Athletes Connor McKinney and Hayden Hopewell are through to the Round of 64 and the first round of matchplay at the US Amateur in New Jersey.
McKinney will take on the low amateur at this year’s US Open, American Travis Vick, following an impressive T14 in the two rounds of strokeplay. Connor started his tournament with a tough 74 to be three over par, suffering from five straight bogeys through holes seven to eleven. He made an exciting comeback in his second round with a three under par 68, the third best score of the day. McKinney is riding high this year following wins at the Australian Amateur and St Andrew’s Links.
Former WA Open champion Hayden Hopewell will take on Argentinian Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira in the Round of 64. This won’t be an easy task as the Argentine has shown strong form in this year’s college tournaments with Arkansas. The West Aussie teed off in the final group of the day and commenced proceedings with birdies at the first and second before experiencing a major hiccup. A triple-bogey at the fourth followed by a bogey at the fifth left Hopewell with his back against the wall to stay inside the top 64 and he responded strongly.
Round of 64 Tee Times (AWST)
10:20pm – Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira vs Hayden Hopwell
11:00pm – Connor McKinney vs Travis Vick
