Western Australia dominates at the top of the girls competition following the second day of match play at the Australian Junior Interstate Series. The WA girls proved on Wednesday they were the team to beat by comfortably defeating Victoria 3-1 and halving their contest with New South Wales.
Captain Amie Phobubpa, who was celebrating her eighteenth birthday sealed the celebration with two wins. Amie led from the front with a 3&1 victory to Victoria’s Amelia Harris and a 4&2 win against NSW’s Charlotte Perkins.
Number one position, Sheridan Clancy closed the match 1UP on the eighteenth defeating Victorian Jazy Roberts with one final birdie. Jorja Hinson-Tolchard had a near flawless round, comfortably winning 4&3.
Sheridan and Jorja fought hard in the afternoon round, but NSW were strong. Jorja made it to the 18th, missing a final birdie to seal the win for NSW’s Lara Thomson 1UP. Sheridan was defeated by Ella Scaysbrook 2&1.
After a tricky morning, Celine Chen came back with force challenging NSW’s Rachel Lee to the 18th, winning the final hole to close the match for WA at 1UP.
Western Australia with two wins and a tie now sit half a point clear of the two other undefeated teams Queensland and New South Wales and they have the chance to sure up the trophy tomorrow in their matchups against South Australia and Queensland.
Joseph Buttress and Alex Maxwell both had confident wins over the Victorian boys. Buttress never faltered from the front, defeating Max Fedmowski 5&4. Maxwell closed out the win for the 2&1 against Victorian Rupert Toomey. WA’s youngsters Riley Gott and Ollie Marsh are to be commended on making it through to the 17th and 18th holes against the strong Victorian side.
NSW proved too strong in the afternoon, defeating the WA boys 4-0. A standout performance from NSW’s Jye Halls who is in incredible form.
WA are off bright an early start for the third day of competition. Another huge day with a morning match against South Australia, afternoon match against Queensland.
