GolfWA recently spoke to Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, the 20 year old from the Gosnells Golf Club who is now playing golf and studying Applied Exercise Science at Oklahoma State University in America. Below is a look at how Maddison has fared so far during her time in the States;
What are you learning from your coaches?
I’m still working with Richie (Smith) over the phone back in Perth, but the coaches here help with game tactics and create a very competitive environment for us to practice and play in”.
How about the quality of the tournaments?
I’ve played 5 college events so far and my best finish is 7th, but I’ve had plenty of Top 20 finishes. It’s hard going as the quality of the players is insane but I’m lucky enough to be on a team where there are girls who are ranked in the Top 50 in the world. Maja (Stark) is ranked 6th in the world and is the benchmark of where I need to get to. I’ve also been lucky enough to visit Houston, Dallas, Arizona and Florida so far.
What’s your favourite memory so far?
My favourite memory so far is when we had snow for a whole week. We had a freak snow storm that covered the entire town and got down to -30 degrees, which is the coldest I have ever felt. We didn’t get much practice done that week because it was nearly impossible. I’ve also been lucky enough to meet Viktor Hovland and Matt Wolff. They are in town every few weeks which is pretty awesome.
How has your team performed this year?
As a team so far we have had 3 tournament wins in the regular season and we just won the Big 12 tournament which is huge. In a few weeks we have regionals and then NCAA which is exciting because our team is really strong so I think we can do really well.
