Reigning Division 1 champions Mount Lawley and Royal Fremantle have it all to do to defend their titles in this weekend’s final round of Junior Pennants matches.
With the 4th round of matches cancelled due to extreme heat conditions in Perth over the weekend, and all teams awarded a halved match, more teams than usual head into the deciding clashes with a chance of claiming the coveted flags.
In Girls’ Division 1, Mount Lawley 1 are looking to complete a historic ‘four-peat’ in the event having won the title in each of the past three years. They have home advantage in the final against Royal Fremantle 1 but lost 3.5-1.5 to their rivals in Round 2 meaning the result is not a foregone conclusion – especially with Mount Lawley GC’s brand new greens in play.
Three teams remain in the hunt for glory in Boys’ Division 1, with Royal Fremantle 1 currently top of the table but able to be deposed by either of Joondalup 1 or Royal Perth 1, depending on results of the final round of matches at Mandurah Country Club.
Victory for Royal Freo over Royal Perth on Sunday will guarantee them the flag for the second year running. However, a big win for third-placed Royal Perth could earn them top spot if Joondalup fail to beat Lake Karrinyup 1. Should Royal Freo not win, victory for Joondalup will be enough for them to secure the title for the first time since 2021.
Elsewhere in Junior Pennants, there’s a straight shootout for the Boys’ Division 2 title between Black Group winners Wanneroo and Gold Group winners Lakelands. With both teams featuring members of the GolfWA State Junior Squad, a thrilling encounter could be in the offing.
In all the other boys’ and girls’ divisions, at least three teams are in contention for top spot, virtually guaranteeing a day of high emotions and drama.
