Abbie Teasdale takes professional plunge

Abbie Teasdale Webex Series Perth

WA state representative Abbie Teasdale will make her professional debut at this week’s Webex Players Series Perth event at her home club of Royal Fremantle.

Teasdale has been one of WA’s leading amateurs for several years after shooting to prominence by winning the 2018 WA Women’s Amateur Championship aged 15.

Since then, she has been a prolific winner at state, national and international level, with notable titles including the WA Women’s Amateur, the Concord Cup and the English Women’s Open Strokeplay in 2023, as well as the English Women’s Amateur Championship and Bowra & O’Dea Women’s Classic in 2022.

She has also regularly represented WA at junior and open-age level in the annual Australian Interstate Teams Matches since the age of 12 and has twice been called up to play for Australia in the 2023 and 2024 Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific.

After achieving so much in the amateur game, 22-year-old Teasdale says now is the ideal time to take the professional plunge as a member of the WPGA Tour of Australasia.

“I just feel that I’ve been playing amateur golf for long enough now, so I wanted to take that next step,” she told GolfWA. “I’ve been hitting the ball really well recently and I want to start making money from my golf now.”

That, of course, is easier said than done, but Teasdale thinks she has a good chance to hit the ground running with her professional debut coming at her home course of Royal Fremantle.

“Having your first pro event at your home club is great advantage,” she said. “I think if I can just stick to my gameplan and not over-think things, I’ll have a good chance this week.

“I know this course very well but the key this week will be keeping your speed on the greens because they are the fastest I’ve ever played them!

“Aside from that, it’s just about playing smart, knowing when you need to play safe and attacking when you can. The course isn’t playing that long, so there’ll be lots of birdie chances.”

Teasdale targets tour success

After coming through WPGA Tour Qualifying School in December, Teasdale has an initial six events in January and February to climb as high as she can in the Order of Merit to earn exemptions into six further tournaments running into April.

While she’s taking nothing for granted, Teasdale believes she has the game to compete well on the local circuit in 2025.

“I think the WPGA Tour will be a great start to my pro career and a place where I can get my confidence up playing against these girls week-in, week-out.

“I’ll need to do well in every event, but if I can do that for the rest of the year it’ll get my confidence up to have a go at Ladies European Tour Qualifying School [in late 2025].

“Over-thinking on the course has always been my biggest problem, so I’m now trying to be less technical and play more freely. I think I’ve got a good chance on tour as long as I keep my mindset where it needs to be.”

You can see Abbie in action at the mixed-field Webex Player Series Perth event at Royal Fremantle from January 9-12. Spectators can get in free. Full event information here.
