Hopewell & Norris capture Callaway Junior

3rd Jul 2018

Two of Western Australia’s brightest stars have claimed the Callaway Junior Championships on Tuesday, with Kathryn Norris and Hayden Hopewell battling the elements to record convincing victories at Melville Glades Golf Club.

With the first round abandoned due to inclement weather, the tournament became an 18-hole shootout, with gusty winds providing a difficult test on day two.

A flurry of birdies on the back nine proved the difference for Hopewell, with the 16-year-old running away from the chasing pack, finishing with a two-under-par 70.

Only a number of shots separated the leading candidates for the boys’ title, before three-straight birdies on 13, 14 and 15 from Hopewell all but secured the championship.

Tom Patterson and Josh Herrero pushed the Royal Fremantle member throughout the round, with both finishing at even-par overall.

Zane Lewis finished in fourth position with a round of 75, however the day belonged to Hopewell, with the WA State Team member incredibly proud of his efforts.

It’s the first time in over six years that Min Woo Lee or Fred Lee haven’t claimed the coveted crown, as Hopewell joins the likes of Curtis Luck as winners of the illustrious trophy.

The day belonged to Kathryn Norris in the Girls’ competition, with the Mandurah local running away with a three-shot victory.

Norris led from start to finish to record a one-under-par 73, finishing three clear of fellow state team member Yeah-Jin Lee.

The three-time 54-hole classic champion fired three birdies throughout her round, with her only blemishes coming on the 10th and 15th.

Norris’ win also ends the Callaway dominance of Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, with the Australian Junior Champion securing the past three titles.

Abbie Teasdale finished in third position, while Madison Large and Alice Chang rounded out the top five.
