Jordan Jung and Kathryn Norris have set the early pace after round one of the Drummond Golf 54-Hole Junior Classic at Harvey Golf Club on Wednesday afternoon.
Norris, 17, continued her blistering form in junior tournaments to take a one-stroke lead over fellow WA State teammate Abbie Teasdale, with Mandurah local coming off a victory last week at the Callaway Junior Championships.
Norris is looking to capture her fourth consecutive Drummond Golf crown, a feat that hasn’t been achieved during the tournaments existence.
The young star began her round in fine style with a birdie on the 11th however struggled on the front nine, with bogeys on the first, second and fourth leaving her at two-over-par.
Teasdale was consistent as always with birdies on her third and fourth holes, a double-bogey on 15 undid her good work to leave the Royal Fremantle member a shot back.
Celine Chen sits in third position 10 shots behind leader Norris.
Jung leads a star-studded line up in the boys’ competition with four members of the WA State Team competing in the tournament down south.
The Melville Glades gun has a two-shot advantage over Callaway Junior Champion Hayden Hopewell, while Ethan Lim and Tom Addy share fourth position.
Jung’s one-under-par 71 included three birdies and two bogeys to lead the chasing back, while Hopewell had difficulty on the front nine to card a one-over 73.
Mandurah’s Cooper Geddes had a day to forget with an opening round 78, with Josh Herreo and Zane Lewis both recording 76 to sit in a tie for sixth.
Tom Patterson couldn’t repeat his heroics from last week, finishing second at the Callaway Junior, as two double-bogeys on the front nine ruined his opening round.
Players will now move to Dunsborough Lakes tomorrow where the second round will take place, before the final round at Busselton Golf Club on Friday.
