Mount Lawley has begun its Women’s Pennants Division One title defence in the best possible manner after a resounding 5-2 victory over Royal Perth in the opening round on Sunday at Lake Karrinyup Country Club.
The Champions, who are in search of a three-peat in 2018, had far too many weapons for Royal Perth, with their top three all gaining narrow victories to gift the side the upper hand.
Kirsten Rudgeley was at her brilliant best to defeat WA Amateur finalist Yeah-Jin Lee 2&1, while WA Girls’ Junior Squad Member Eve Cohen stole victory over fellow teammate Brooke Price.
Danielle Dunn pulled the tie back for Royal Perth with a 4&2 win, however comfortable victories for Alice Chang and Vanessa Benci sealed the fixture for the flag favourites.
Elsewhere, Cottesloe fought hard to grind a narrow 4-3 first up win over Wanneroo. In a tight contest for all of Sunday morning, late victories to their number six and seven were enough for Cottesloe to get the points.
Georgia Shears showed her class early to easily account for Chandler Pyke 4 &3; however Cottesloe’s Lisa Taylor levelled the tie with a 4&3 win over Loraine Metcalfe.
Karl Marzec and Jasmine Luck became the difference in the end with victories over Sonet Coetzee and Jan Plaisted respectively enough to win the tie.
WA Golf Club were the other big winners of the first round with a resounding 5-2 victory over Royal Fremantle.
Abbie Teasdale won the battle of the young guns over Claudia Pisano 1up, while Janine Northrop needed extra holes to defeat Candice High on the 19th.
Isabell Utama kept Royal Fremantle in the content with a 4&2 win over Sue Mack, however wins to Shanara Patman and Nola Hackman proved too much. The WA Golf Club running out 5-1 winners.
The Vines, Mount Lawley and Melville Glades got off to the perfect start in Division 2 with wins in their opening rounds.
Despite a dominant win from Kathryn Norris, Mandurah couldn’t match it with The Vines losing 5-2. Rhonda Carter and Kerrie Holmes starred in the first up victory.

Joondalup stamped their authority on Division 3 after a 7-0 whitewash over Melville Glades at the Western Australian Golf Club.
Australian Junior Champion Maddison Hinson-Tolchard continued her fine form with a 7&6 victory over Leonie Green, as her beloved Gosnells side took a 4-3 win.
Wanneroo and Royal Perth were comfortable winners in Division 4 at Mandurah Country Club, with Kwinana made to work hard for their advantage over Western Australian Golf Club 4.5-2.5.
Mount Lawley and Joondalup couldn’t be split in Division 5 at Sea View Golf Club, while Lake Karrinyup and Royal Fremantle took easy wins in their opening fixtures.
