After 13 long years, Western Australia are the Australian Girls’ Interstate Champions again.
The young WA chargers were dominant throughout the week, going through the event with only one loss and wrapping up the tournament victory inside two days.
It is the first victory for the Sandgropers since 2005, when the team of Wendy Hillier, Nacha Kirilak, Katie Molloy, Nicole Montgomery, Kristie Smith and Hannah Thomson tasted success at the Glenelg Golf Club in South Australia.
The week was full of highlights for WA and continued to showcase the depth that the winning state possesses at an Amateur level.
The last day of the Series became somewhat of a formality on Tuesday, with WA having already sealed the title a day earlier after a crushing 4-1 win over Queensland.
New South Wales put in a solid performance to knock off the champions 4.5-0.5 on the final day, meaning the travelling side finished second by just 0.5 points.
Queensland and South Australia finished the other victors in the morning, with Queensland rounding out the top 3.
Yeah-Jin Lee, Kirsten Rudgeley and Kathryn Norris only tasted defeat once throughout their five matches, with Abbie Teasdale and Eve Cohen showing consistency all week.
The WA side was led strongly by Maddison-Hinson Tolchard capping off her stellar week with an Interstate and Junior Amateur crown.
Coach Kerrod Gray was thrilled with the outcome, putting the performance down to a very cohesive group of girls.
“They really bonded as a team. Each team member was equally as instrumental in all of our victories. Huge congrats to all the teams that were out there today,” Gray said.
“We just put ourselves in a position on the last day were we couldn’t be beaten, which was a great feeling. “
“To cap off the week with the performance that we did, everyone is just really happy.”
Many of the WA girls found themselves behind in their different matches, however found a way to win in the tight moment.
“It’s a combination of the team bonding and the training that we have done,” Gray said.
“We did a lot of hard work around the greens which really helped us in the tough stages of the tournament.”
The win means WA have secured three of the four Golf Australia tournaments staged this week, with the Boys’ Interstate yet to be completed.
