A number of Western Australian golfers will descend on Lake Karrinyup Country Club and Wanneroo Golf Club this week for the Australian Amateur Championships, with plenty of local talent in the hunt for a tournament victory.
Min Woo Lee (Royal Fremantle) was a finalist last year and will want to go one better at this year’s tournament, while Kiran Day (Cottesloe) and Haydn Barron (WA Golf Club) will also lead the charge for the WA male contingent. Ben Ferguson (The Vines) and Fred Lee (Royal Perth) will also be keen to impress in the National event.
Kathryn Norris (Mandurah) will be buoyed after her victory at the South Australian Junior Masters last weekend, with Kirsten Rudgeley (Wanneroo) and Maddison Hinson-Tolchard (Gosnells) eager to make an impact in the week long tournament.
Former high profile winners include West Australians Minjee Lee and Brett Rumford, with many of the current crop looking to follow in their heroes footsteps.
The winners will receive exemptions into their respective Australian Open’s, making this event the most prized title in Australian Amateur golf.
Stroke play qualifying rounds will take place at Wanneroo and Lake Karrinyup, before the field is narrowed to the leading 64 men and 32 women who then contest elimination match play at Lake Karrinyup from Thursday.
