Jason Scrivener to play in 100th WA Open

5th Oct 2024

Jason Scrivener WA Open

DP World Tour star Jason Scrivener will play in the Bowra & O’Dea Nexus Advisernet WA Open at Mandurah Country Club this month.

A Mandurah local who grew up playing the game at the Country Club, Scrivener is the highest-profile golfer to commit to the championship, which will take place from October 17-20.

This year marks the 100th staging of the event, which forms part of the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia’s annual schedule. Mandurah Country Club hosts for the first time.

Scrivener, aged 35, has been a consistent performer on the DP World Tour since earning his playing rights in 2014. He has played in 240 tour events, amassing more than AU$8.3m in prize money.

Despite remaining in contention to qualify for the tour’s season-ending playoffs in the United Arab Emirates, Scrivener says the lure of playing in his home state’s 100th Open was too strong to miss.

“I can’t wait to play the WA Open. It’s an event that has meant so much to me growing up here in the west,” Scrivener told GolfWA.

“To play it at my home course, in front of the members of Mandurah Country Club, my family and friends who have been such an integral part of my career will be pretty special.”

Gary Thomas, Chief Executive of GolfWA, the governing body that stages the championship, says that Scrivener’s commitment is a great boost to the event.

“Jason is one of the leading tour professionals to have come out of WA in the last decade and to have him in the field for our 100th Open at his home club is fantastic for the fans and for his fellow professionals in the field.

“It’s great that Jason has decided to come back and support the WA Open, given that there are significant events that he could be playing on the DP World Tour. That speaks volumes about his character and we look forward immensely to seeing how he will perform at Mandurah Country Club.”

Scrivener will start the WA Open as a red-hot favourite at a course he knows like the back of his hand. As recently as April, he scorched round the par-71 track in just 58 strokes.

Scrivener Barron WA Open

Jason Scrivener and fellow DP World Tour pro Haydn Baron will both play the WA Open

He is the latest high-profile WA golfer to confirm attendance at the event after fellow DP World Tour player Haydn Barron committed to playing earlier this week.

Former European Tour winner Jarrod Moseley, who also plays out of Mandurah Country Club, will contest the championship for the first time since 2019, while Mandurah-based WPGA Tour player Kathryn Norris also earned an invitation.

The WA Open is the state’s oldest professional championship, which was first staged in 1913 and has a roll of Honour that includes Major winners Greg Norman, Kel Nagle, Gary Player and Ian Baker-Finch.

The Bowra & O’Dea Nexus Advisernet WA Open takes place at Mandurah Country Club from October 17-20. Spectators can attend for free.
