Jordan Doull and Celine Chen have won the Roy Paxton and Ivie Temperley Trophies for the lowest scoring averages across the 2023-24 season.
Mount Lawley’s Doull topped the Roy Paxton scoring charts with an average of 69.35 from 55 rounds. This left him narrowly ahead of Lake Karrinyup’s Joe Owen (69.52) and Connor Fewkes (Goldfields GC, 69.79).
The accolade marked a fitting send-off from the amateur game for WA state representative Doull, aged 25, who switched to the pro ranks in May after earning his PGA Tour of Australasia playing card at Q-School.
“It was never really something I had thought about winning, I was just out there trying to play good golf and have a low stroke average for my own personal goals,” Doull said. “It’s pretty cool to have my name on that trophy with the calibre of players that are already on it.”
Joondalup Country Club’s Chen, meanwhile, claimed the Ivie Temperley Trophy with a scoring average of 70.60 from 16 rounds. Clubmate Amie Phobubpa was second (71.41), with Mount Lawley’s Isabella Leniartek third (71.50).
A WA state player at junior and open-age level, 18-year-old Chen completed all of her counting rounds prior to moving to the US collegiate golf circuit in January.
“I’m really pleased,” Chen told GolfWA. “It’s been in the back of my mind and it’s a pretty big deal to win this because you have to play consistently well in the big events.
“I was runner-up last year, so it’s a big confidence boost to win this and it’s great to see how my game has improved over the past year.”
To be eligible to win the scoring average trophies, players must have recorded a minimum of 15 rounds over the course of the season. You can view the season’s final standings here.
The scoring average awards were announced at the GolfWA Annual Golf Day and Dinner at The Western Australian Golf Club. The event is a staple on the GolfWA calendar, taking place each August and bringing together board members and representatives from metropolitan and regional clubs to celebrate the year of WA golf.
The Golf Day & Dinner also featured an 18-hole Stableford competition, with teams competing for the Hastings Reid Cup. This was won by Wanneroo Golf Club’s Michael Hayes, Alan Vines, Lynn Delahey and Jay Giles.
