Twelve WA golfers will be looking to kick off their 2024 seasons in style at the Australian Master of the Amateurs tournament in Victoria.
The 72-hole stroke play championship attracts one of the best fields of the year, with 168 from 22 countries competing in the 2024 championship at Southern Golf Club, on Melbourne’s renowned sandbelt, from January 9-12.
With numerous players within the top 100 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings teeing it up, the event represents a great opportunity for Australian players to compete against some of the best in the world with the promise of a ranking points bonanza for a high finish.
Leading the men’s field will be US pair Cole Sherwood, ranked 15th in the WAGR rankings, and William Moll, ranked 21st. The women’s field, meanwhile, features Avani Prashanth (India), ranked 55th in the world, followed by Justice Bosio (Australia, 69th) and Jeneath Wong (Malaysia, 72nd).
Eight Western Australians will compete in the men’s championship, including GolfWA High Performance athletes Tom Addy, Ollie Marsh, Josiah Edwards, Joseph Buttress, Connor Fewkes and Jordan Doull, with Liam McEvoy also competing.
In the women’s event, WA will be represented by Joondalup CC’s Amie Phobubpa, Mount Lawley duo Erina Tan and Sophie Williams, and Lake Karrinyup’s Jennifer Herbst, who is competing during the winter break on the US College golf circuit.
As well as the ranking points, the winners of the men’s and women’s championships will earn exemptions into the PGA Tour of Australasia’s Webex Players Series Hunter Valley event at Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort in February.
Past winners of the Australian Master of the Amateurs include Jason Day (2006), David Micheluzzi (2018), Sahith Theegala (2020) and Steph Kyriacou (2019), while other notable competitors include Rickie Fowler (2009), Tommy Fleetwood (2010), Ryan Fox (2011) and Bryson DeChambeau (2015).
