The MyGolf in Schools program presented by Smarter than Smoking is designed for 5 to 12-year-olds and is the major driver of junior golf participation in Western Australia. GolfWA is committed to supporting access to, and participation in, golf activities for all communities and recently presented the program to students in the Wheatbelt region.
Term three of the program presented by Smarter than Smoking teed off at Brookton District High school, one of four schools to benefit from tuition by GolfWA’s Junior Game Development Officer, Jordan McSkimming.
The beauty of the MyGolf in Schools program is that it introduces the sport to children that otherwise might not have had the opportunity to give golf a go.
Brookton DHS Physical Education Teacher Ryan Sheridan jumped at the opportunity to introduce golf into the sport curriculum.
Ryan is an accomplished golfer himself and he even hoisted the Aglime Sand Greens trophy in 2016 when the tournament was held in Brookton.
Speaking about the program, Ryan said: “It’s good to have access to golf because it adds to our sports program and it’s not something we can normally do at school.”
Schools in Pingelly and Narrogin also served as stops on the 2019 MyGolf in Schools regional road trip.
Some numbers from the road:
- +400 kilometres driven
- 14 MyGolf sessions conducted
- +350 kids introduced to golf
- Over 3,300 balls hit!
Healthway is a dedicated partner and supporter of the MyGolf in Schools program presented by Smarter than Smoking and GolfWA would like to thank them for their support.
