Connor Fewkes and Jose De Sousa have teamed up to take the honours at the 2019 Foursomes Amateur Championship of Western Australia.
The pairing of Fewkes (Goldfields GC) and De Sousa (Gosnells GC) came out firing early in the morning round to card a three-under 69 that placed them atop the leaderboard after 18-holes.
The all-Cottesloe pairing of Michael Hanrahan-Smith and Thomas Patterson sat hot on the heels of Fewkes and De Sousa, just two shots back heading into the second round.
Hanrahan-Smith and Patterson would be well acquainted with each other’s games having played alongside each other in Cottesloe’s Division One Pennant team.
Fewkes and De Sousa stumbled late in the day recording three bogeys after making the turn in the second round. Hanrahan-Smith and Patterson piled on the pressure by birdieing holes 10 and 13 just as the leaders were faltering.
A birdie at 13 helped Fewkes and De Sousa break their run of dropped shots. This momentum didn’t last long as the pairing took five shots to find the bottom of the cup at the Par-3 14th.
Despite their struggles during the final nine, the lead that Fewkes and De Sousa had built during their morning round proved unsurmountable and the duo would end up two shots clear atop the leaderboard to claim the 2019 title.
Speaking after the round the pairing said, “The Layout was challenging today, couple of tucked flags that were hard to get to.”
All in all, the course was in great condition given the weather last night. We putted very well on the front 9 both times and we scrambled well all day.
Abbie Teasdale (Royal Fremantle GC) has continued her stellar run of form to claim the Women’s Foursomes title alongside Madison Large (Joondalup CC).
Fresh off setting two new course records during the Drummond 54-Hole Junior Classic, Abbie and partner Madison got off to a hot start early on Sunday morning. The pairing carded a 76 to sit two shots ahead of the Gosnells duo of Maddy and Jorja Hinson-Tolchard. The Como Golf Academy pairing of Minke Terblanche (Royal Perth GC) and Mai Julius (Melville Glades) were also within striking distance and level with the Hinson-Tolchard sisters.
Jennifer Herbst and Alysha Ahnantakrishnan combined well to card 75 in the second round, moving them into third overall.
Teasdale and Large continued their good form into the second round and looked to be cruising towards the 2019 championship.
Two late bogeys on 17 and 18 opened the door for the Hinson-Tolchard sisters to strike. Unfortunately, a double bogey of their own on 17 effectively ended their chances of lifting the trophy.
The Teasdale and Large pairing ran out the winners of the 2019 Foursomes Amateur Championship of Western Australia.
Abbie Teasdale’s run of brilliant form continues and she will now look to carry this into the Asia Pacific Junior Championship in Japan later this month.
