Joondalup Country Club’s Gareth Steyn won his first event on the US collegiate golf circuit over the weekend – qualifying for a PGA Tour event in the process.
Representing Georgia State University, Steyn fired a final-round 65 (seven under) to capture individual medalist honors at the White Sands Bahamas NCAA Men’s Invitational and earn an exemption into the PGA Tour’s 2024 Puerto Rico Open next March.
Steyn finished with a 15-under par 201 total in the 54-hole event to post a one-stroke victory. He birdied six of his first eight holes on the 7,099-yard, par 72 Ocean Club Golf Course at Paradise Island, Bahamas, and added another at the 16th to complete a blemish-free round.
It is Steyn’s first win in US college golf in his second year at Georgia State. He will become the first current GSU player to compete in a PGA Tour event when he tees up at the Puerto Rico Open, which takes place from March 7-10 at Grand Reserve Golf Club in San Juan.
“Securing my first collegiate win and earning myself a spot in the Puerto Rico Open is nothing short of a dream,” Steyn said on Instagram.
