Ryan Peake blew away the competition to claim the 2019 Aglime of Australia Sand Greens Championship of Western Australia held at Narembeen Golf Club last weekend.
The Lakelands Country Club member carded a second round of 64 (8-under) on his way to breaking the Narembeen GC course record to claim his second Aglime Sands Championship.
Peake’s second round got off to a hot start with birdies on the opening two holes and an eagle on the fourth.
As Peake surged, his playing partners began to falter with Rodney ‘Rocket’ Shemeld (Calingiri GC) and Shaun Malone (Mount Lawley GC) both dropping shots early.
Busselton Golf Club member, Adam Davey started the second round level with Peake and was able to card an eagle of his own on the Par-5 4th hole.
Unfortunately, three dropped shots in the next five holes would quickly halt Davey’s momentum.
Bunbury Golf Club member Tim Gilotti started the second round two shots back of Peake. Bogeys on the first and third holes threatened to derail Gilotti’s round but four birdies in the next four holes helped him wrangle back control of his scorecard.
Five more birdies on the back nine gave Gilotti a second round of 66 (6-under) and a brief share of the Narembeen GC course record.
Brookton GC member Chris Rawes is a perennial contender at this event and a consistent two rounds of golf ensured ‘Rawesy’s’ name appeared near the top of the leader board yet again.
Peake’s only dropped shot of the day came at the 14th but any concerns of a dramatic late collapse were quickly extinguished when he rolled in a 15m birdie putt from off the green on the Par-3 15th.
Speaking after the event Peake said, “Dad told me to just come out this week and have fun. It just clicked this week and I’m happy to be here and to get a win.”
I got off to a good start birdieing the first and lipping-out for a hole-in-one on the second and that’s when I thought that maybe I could get a really good score here.
“It’s funny, I actually took a photo of the old scorecard of the course record on the first day I was here.”

The 2019 Aglime Sand Greens Championship of Western Australia attracted over 180 competitors from 60 golf clubs.
The much-loved event is a favourite on the local calendar and it’s wonderful to see the camaraderie and mateship that is on display across the entire weekend.
Narembeen Golf Course was in wonderful condition and it is tantamount to the tremendous work done by Hendy Cowan and the other volunteers. The entire team of Narembeen Golf Club members and volunteers should be extremely proud of the wonderful event that they ran.
Next year the Aglime Sand Greens Championship heads south to Albany and the picturesque Riverview Golf Club. We can’t wait to see you there!
