Kwinana Golf Club was in pristine condition as players arrived for the finals of this year’s GolfWA Public Course pennants.
Armadale & Districts Golf Club has dominated Public Pennants this year with all three competing teams making it into the finals. This is a credit to the club that has seen good growth in membership since the new course opened in early 2018.
In the Open Category (off the stick) Armadale & Districts number one player (and scratch marker) Tavis Whitcher led the team with a clinical display to take his match 7 and 5 with Peter Greaves and Matt Lockyer adding the team total of games to three. However, this was balanced by the Glen Iris Lakes Golf Club team with wins to captain Garry Forbes and teammates John McCrum and Tony Bromwich.
So with three wins apiece, this sent the number one players back onto the course for a sudden-death playoff which saw Armadale’s Tavis Whitcher triumph on the first playoff hole over Glen Iris’s Jon Black.
The closeness of results continued in the A1 Handicap Category with the team from Armadale & Districts Golf Club finishing with wins in matches 4, 5 and 6. Fremantle Pirates top order countered this by winning their three matches thanks to Dave Christiansen, Andrew Billingham and captain John Constance all recording 2 and 1 results.
This saw number one’s from both teams head to another sudden-death with Dave Christiansen getting the better of Jeff Graham on their first playoff hole. This victory equates to a hat-trick of wins to the Fremantle Pirates team over the past three years which is a great accomplishment.
The A2 division final saw the third Armadale & Districts Golf Club team dominate the Hill View team with a comprehensive 5 to 1 result. Captain Laurie Blundell and number one player Ryan Evans led from the front with other wins to Duncan Swanson, Sean Jones and Dick Genobles.
It was a battle of the Kiwi teams from the Kalamunda Golf Club in the B1 final. Ben Watts lead his team to victory and has earned bragging rights for 2019. A solid 4½ to 1½ result will be well-spoken about over the offseason for the boys from Kalamunda and sure to provide some added competition for all in their regular weekly games.
It was a great season and all players were complimentary of the Kwinana layout and their hospitality. On behalf of GolfWA and all competitors, I would like to thank General Manager Darrin Ramshaw and his committee for availing the course for the finals.
Information for the 2020 season will be forwarded to all affiliated golf clubs playing at public courses in early November and we hope to continue to grow the competition for future years.
