Second UK summer title for prolific Teasdale

English Women's Open Strokeplay Championship

Royal Fremantle’s Abbie Teasdale’s hot streak continued as she won the English Women’s Open Strokeplay Championship at Manchester Golf Club.

Twenty-one-year-old Teasdale, the reigning WA Women’s Amateur champion, edged 17-year-old Nellie Ong in a four-hole sudden-death playoff at Manchester Golf Club after the pair were level at 9-under par through 72 holes.

Ong had entered the final round leading by three shots, but the lead changed hands several times in the final round before a playoff ensued after Teasdale dropped a shot at the last.

Teasdale had a seven-foot putt to win on the first hole of the playoff but left it short, then had to hole a 10-footer for birdie to tie the third extra hole. However, Teasdale ultimately prevailed on the fourth playoff hole with a rock-solid par while Ong could only make bogey.

It was Teasdale’s second victory of the summer in the UK, having taken out the English Women’s Under 25 Championship at Woburn in July. The title was extra sweet for Teasdale, as Manchester GC is her local club when based in the UK and she enjoyed the backing of the majority of the crowd.

Teasdale has now moved up to 154th position in the World Amateur Golf Rankings – her highest position to date.
