Senior Women’s Pennants wraps up in fine style

8th Aug 2023

A day of high drama ensued during the final round of the GolfWA Senior Women’s Pennants, with three of the four divisions going right down to the wire.

The match of the day was arguably the title decider between Cottesloe and Gosnells in the Central Black Division of the 4BBB championship.

Cottesloe had to win the match by two clear points to pinch the crown from Gosnells, who were unbeaten after the opening four rounds – a feat they achieved with wins for Cindy Song and Jane Kingsworth (7&5), Lynne Malone and Pat Luck (6&5), and Margaret Smith and Julia Range (2&1).

Although Andy Riggir and Lyn Johnston put a point on the board for Gosnells, Cottesloe’s 3-1 win gave them the narrowest margin of victory in the final standings after the two teams tied on 7 points.

Cottesloe finished with 13 matches for and seven against across their five matches, with Gosnells just shy of that total with 12.5 matches for and 7.5 against.

Three teams entered the final round with a chance of victory in the Central Gold Division, but it was The Vines (pictured top) who took the title courtesy of a 3-1 win over Lakelands.

Wanneroo’s hopes hinged on The Vines falling to defeat, making their 2.5-1.5 win over Mount Lawley only good enough for second place, while Seaview, who had an outside shot at top spot if results went their way, were well beaten by Lake Karrinyup to claim third.

The Vines enjoyed further success in the North Division, claiming their third consecutive title with a 100% winning record from their five matches. They had an unassailable lead heading into the final round of matches where they further underlined their credentials with a 3.5-0.5 win over Hartfield.

It was a much closer affair in the South Division, with Pinjarra and Melville Glades going head-to-head on a final-day showdown. Both sides had amassed six points from their opening four matches, but Melville Glades needed to win outright to deny Pinjarra, who had a superior record in individual matches won.

Despite a titanic battle, which saw two matches decided on the 18th hole, the teams battled to an entertaining 2-2 draw, granting Pinjarra the flag.

“It was a tremendous final day and a fitting climax to what has been another exceptional season of Women’s Senior Pennants,” said GolfWA Operations Manager Neil Goddard.

“Congratulations to our winners and to all the teams, who have once more exemplified the spirit in which competitive golf should be played.”
