Day 2 was moving day with perfect conditions again for the elite amateur field competing in the Steelscene Mandurah Amateur Open at the immaculate Mandurah Country Club.
A total of 16 players broke par with the pick of the bunch four under 67’s from last years champion Haydn Barron from the WA Golf Club and Victorian Konrad Ciupek. Haydn and Konrad both jumped out of the blocks with five birdies a piece on their front nines but unfortunately, Haydn bogeyed the short par 4 2nd hole. Both added a bogey on the back nine but a two-putt birdie on the par 5 11th hole for Barron saw them both sign for 4 under for the day and leave both well in sight of the leaders.
Our current leader is Edward Donoghue who plays out of The Metropolitan Golf Club in Victoria showed consistent play with controlled, strategic rounds accumulating five birdies in his first round and another four today with his only dropped shots coincidently all on par threes.
One shot back is Joondalup’s Tom Addy who again showed his short game magic adding a two-under 69 to his three under 68 on Day one. Speaking to Tom after his round he suggested it could have been so much better as he combined 5 birdies with a lone blemish of a triple-bogey 7 on the par 4 9th hole where his second shot landed left of the green and rolled away down a path to finish just out of bounds. To his credit, Tom stayed focused with a two-under back nine to make it into the leading group with Donoghue and Ciupek.
First-round leaders Lochie Coleburn and Hayden Hopewell added 71 and 72 respectfully to maintain touch with the leaders.
This Australian and World ranking event also sees a two man Interstate teams component and the WA team of Hayden Hopewell and Haydn Barron currently bragging rights with a five-shot advantage over their closest rivals Victorians.
