Perth’s Joseph Buttress has reached the knockout stage of the US Junior Amateur after easing through the stroke play qualifying rounds in South Carolina.
Seventeen-year-old Buttress fired rounds of 70 and 71 for a two-under-par 36-hole total at the Daniel Island Club. It was good enough for T19th place with the top 64 qualifying for the match play rounds. He will play Californian Kush Arora in Round 1 tomorrow.
The Western Australian Golf Club member is enjoying a productive trip to the US. After spending time with Cam Smith in the build-up to the US Open in June, Buttress set a course record in qualifying for the US Junior Am, shooting an eight-under-par 64 at RiverCrest GC in Pennsylvania.
Buttress was joined in the match play draw by fellow Aussie Harry Takis after the Queenslander posted a three-under-par total in the qualifying rounds.
