Drummond Golf Men’s Country Week has wrapped up again for another year and what a week of golf it was!
293 players from 52 country clubs played at 14 different metropolitan courses across four action-packed days of golf.
The Western Australian Golf Club was the host venue for the 36-Hole Stroke Play Championship on Tuesday.
The mercury peaked at over 30 degrees which made back-to-back rounds of 18-holes a challenge for all competitors on course.
Busselton’s Adam Davey is a perennial contender at Country Week and 2019 proved to be no exception.
An even-par opening round of 70 gave the 2018 Champion a 5-shot lead over Bunbury’s Tim Gilotti as the players headed out for their second round.
As the heat began to build, so did Gilotti’s scoring. The Bunbury local matched Davey’s opening round of 70 to stake a claim for the 2019 title. Davey faltered in the afternoon heat and carded a 6-over round that saw Gilotti walk away with a one-shot victory and his maiden Country Week Stroke Play title.
Pinjarra local Michael Stirk, a four-time winner of this event, finished 3-shots behind Gilotti in third place.
Busselton’s Cobus Botha took out honours in the Nett competition with two very respectable rounds of 71 and 74.
Attention then turned to Rockingham Golf Club on Thursday for the 36-Hole Foursomes Championship.
After a long week of golf, there were a few weary souls trudging around the course. The men in carts seemed to be enjoying their time a little more and appeared to have a little more spring in their step.
Michael Stirk needs a special mention for walking 36 holes on both Tuesday and Thursday whilst carrying his bag. An impressive effort for sure!
Adam Davey again proved his class as he teamed up with Capel GC member Shaye Trezise (the man with the most fashionable hat in WA golf) to claim the Foursomes Championship.
Davey and Trezise fired two consistent rounds of 73 to finish at 2-over and claim a convincing 4 shot victory ahead of Bunbury GC members Greg Golinski and Shane O’Donovan.
Nett honours in the Foursomes went to Dongara’s Ian Carlhausen and Peter Leeson who combined beautifully to finish at 2-under.
Liam Mutter teamed up with fellow Three Springs member Tim Butler to finish second in the Nett competition. Liam managed to relegate his brother Bailey to 5th spot in the Nett competition and will now have family bragging rights for the next 12 months.
Country week celebrations wrapped up on Friday with the annual City vs Country match play event.
The country boys have again flexed their muscles to record a convincing 5.5 – 1.5 victory. The gents looked dashing in their pink Puma shirts and have now won back-to-back titles.
