Perth’s Minjee Lee and Hannah Green secured top-15 finishes at the US Women’s Open at iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Defending champion Lee (pictured above) was unable to repeat her heroics from last year, but put up a spirited effort and was ever present in the upper echelons of the leaderboard thorughout the week.
Tied for ninth and eight strokes back entering the final round, Lee needed a fast start to move into contention but an early bogey and nine straight pars left her with too much to do. Despite making a fine birdie on 18, Lee closed with a three-over 75.
Green, meanwhile, improved as the week went on and made an eagle at the par-five 6th on her way to a closing three-under-par 69. It left her tied with Lee and fellow Aussie Grace Kim in 13th place on +4 for the championship, with all three earning US$167,641 in the process.
A fourth Australian, Gabi Ruffels, finished in T33rd, a further four shots back, while WA amateur star Maddison Hinson-Tolchard was unable to make the halfway cut.
The championship – the most prestigious in women’s golf – was won by American Allisen Corpuz, who held off a charge by Britain’s Charley Hull to record a three-stroke victory at -9, winning US$2m for her week’s work. View the final results here.
