Perth’s Joseph Buttress has stormed into the US Junior Amateur Championship after topping qualifying – setting a course record in the process.
The 17-year-old WAGC member claimed medalist honors in qualifying at RiverCrest Golf Club and Preserve in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, scorching round the par 71, 6,627-yard layout in a course record 64 strokes. He required only 29 strokes to complete his back nine.
Buttress progresses to play in the US Junior Amateur at Daniel Island Club in South Carolina in late July. The prestigious title has been won by the likes of Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, David Duval and WA’s own Min Woo Lee in 2016.
“It’s pretty cool to qualify in my first attempt,” Buttress told the Golf Association of Philadelphia. “64 is one of my better rounds in competition and today was the first time I broke 30 on nine holes, so that was awesome.”
It has already been a standout year for Buttress, who recently spent two weeks with Cam Smith in Florida after being named one of the two winners of the 2023 Cam Smith Scholarship. He is also committed to the US collegiate golf circuit in 2024 and will represent the University of Illinois.
